Product Description

Corn syrup solids are the dry form of corn syrup, a sweetener derived from corn. It is used in foods where it is impractical to use liquid syrup. It is less sweet than cane sugar (table sugar or sucrose) with a sweetness level or dextrose equivalent (DE) of 24 rating. We also offer DE 36, under "Size" drop down above select "Other". The higher the rating the sweeter it is.

Corn syrup solids are used in powdered coffee creamers and dry beverage mixes. Corn syrup solids are also added as a thickener as it adds texture and mouth-feel to many processed foods. It is also an ingredient in baby formula. Corn syrup solids are also used to encapsulate food ingredients, like flavors. The “sugar coated” flavor is protected from degradation, oxidation and rancidity.

It is used to increase the sugar content of many products, to stabilize ice creams and sorbets, make syrup and jam, and increase the shelf life of baked goods. In sugar work, Glucose prevents recrystallization of sugars and makes the sugar mass elastic.

Its major uses in commercially prepared foods are as a thickener, sweetener, and humectant (an ingredient that retains moisture and thus maintains a food's freshness). Glucose syrup is also widely used in the manufacture of a variety of candy products.

Other Use and Industries

Corn syrup solids are used in the pharmaceutical industry as a flavoring for flu drink mixes and antacids. It serves as a delivery aid for unpleasant tasting medications. It is also the main ingredient in throat lozenges and can be used in coating of vitamins and tablets.

Glucose syrup is often used as part of the mixture that goes into creating fake blood for films and television. Blood mixtures that contain glucose syrup are very popular among independent films and film makers, as it is cheap and easy to obtain.

Health Effects

Consumers are increasingly more aware of the negative effects of consuming too much sugar. Although, not under as much fire as high fructose corn syrup, research is showing that both products are metabolized by the body in the same way. Others tout that high fructose is the “bad sugar” and corn syrup, containing only glucose molecules, is safer.
