Tetrasodium EDTA chelating agent is a white, crystalline powder of the tetrasodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It is produced by a special process, which ensures that it contains very few impurities (low Na3NTA content).
Applications
Tetrasodium EDTA is recommended for alkaline products, like most handcrafted soap (and can also be used in creams and lotions). EDTA works synergistically with your preservative to improve preservative efficacy. In soaps, it can counteract the defoaming action of hardness ions, reducing soap scum and improving lather.
Soap: The addition of EDTA to curd soap, toilet soap and shaving soap can prevent discoloration and rancidity. Can be added to bar soap in concentrations of 0.1 - 0.2%.
Electroplating: Can be incorporated in all types of alkaline degreasers to stabilize polyphosphates and to prevent lime soaps from flocculating. This prolongs the working life of degreasing baths. It can also be used in neutral and alkaline derusting and descaling baths.
Rubber: Can be used to complex the ferrous ions in the catalyst systems used in the polymerization of rubber. Articles to be coated with rubber should be boiled for 1-2 hours in a 1-2 g/l solution of EDTA.
Water Softening: Can be used to soften cooling water and process water. TRILON BX Powder can also soften boiler water feed; dissolve boiler scale and prevent new scale from forming.
Detergents/Cleaners: There are many applications for EDTA Powder in detergents and cleaners. It is popular due to its chelating capacity and its resistance to hydrolysis. It is also used in industrial detergents and cleaners.
Other Applications: EDTA Powder can boost the detergency of surfactants; can be added to emulsions, including lubricants and polishes to minimize the effects of hardness ions and polyvalent metals salts.
FORMULATING WITH EDTA
EDTA should be added to the water phase of formulations.
STORAGE
Disodium EDTA and Tetrasodium EDTA should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry place.
