Orange Wax is 100% natural and is a by-product of the food industry, production of essential oils and orange terpenes. It is extracted from orange peels with the use of mechanical presses and is further processed to produce the wax.
Chemically it is very similar to lanolin and as such it can be looked upon as a vegetable version of that animal wax. In many formulations it can substitute lanolin.
Orange Wax consists of a complex mixture of special esters, free fatty acids, hydrocarbons, free sterols and free alcohols. In addition to this Orange Wax contains small amounts of flavonoids, carotenoids, glycolipids and phospholopids which are well known for their anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and sunscreen properties.
This emollient wax improves skin-feel of a product and contributes to barrier function and moisture regulation.
Formulators will find natural Orange Wax to have excellent emollient properties. It contains phytosterols which acts as co-emulsifiers to aid in stabilizing emulsion formulations. Orange Wax is also reputed to possess anti-microbial properties and can be used in salves and balms. It can also be used in lotions, creams, lip balms, shampoos, conditioners or any other formulations that require a natural color and scent. De-odorized to lessen the characteristic natural aroma.
