It is springtime in Florida. Beehives are moved into the Apalachiola River basin to glean the nectar from the Ogeche Tupelo Tree. This small, sometimes shrubby tree with a greenish flower, grows in the swampy area of Northwestern Florida.
Beekeeping in these swampy areas is a challenging experience; most trees grow knee-deep in water. Beehives are often placed on fourteen-foot high platforms several hundred feet in length. Instead of moving hives by forklift and truck, local beekeepers move through the river bed on barges, lifting their hives by hand (as seen in the movie Ulee’s Gold).
These difficulties do not outweigh the demand for the desirous White Tupelo Honey. Hive locations are jealously guarded and handed down through families proud of their product.
This Florida ‘Certified’ White Tupelo Honey, with its outstanding non-granulating characteristic (rarely crystallizes!), is packed expressly for you by the happy folks at Moonshine!
Moon Shine Trading Company is a small family operated business. In 1979 Ishai Zeldner, founder, bottled Yellow Star Thistle and gave it away to his friends.
