Women use false unicorn for treating ovarian cysts, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, vomiting from pregnancy, and infertility. Some women take it to normalize hormones after discontinuing birth control pills.*
False unicorn is also used to treat digestive problems and to relieve water retention by increasing urine flow. Some people also use it to rid the intestines of worms.
False unicorn might contain chemicals that stimulate the uterus and kill intestinal worms. It might also increase the production of urine.
Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses
False unicorn root was used by the Eclectic medical movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its chief use was for "female complaints" or as a uterine tonic in the treatment of menstrual disorders or morning sickness. Its use in combination preparations for painful or irregular menstruation is reportedly increasing in the United States.
General uses
False unicorn also has been used for appetite stimulation and to promote production of urine, expel intestinal worms, induce vomiting, and as a mild GI tract tonic; however, clinical studies to support any of these uses are limited.
Suggested Dosage
False unicorn doses have traditionally been 1 to 2 g of the root as a tea, or 2 to 5 mL of the tincture 3 times a day as a uterine tonic or diuretic; however, there are no clinical studies to support a particular dose. Preparations have not been standardized.
Precautions: Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It's not safe to use false unicorn if you are pregnant. It might cause uterine contractions and threaten the pregnancy.
Not enough is known about the safety of using false unicorn during breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
Stomach or intestinal disorders (gastrointestinal disorders): False unicorn can irritate the stomach and intestines. Don't use it if you have any problems with your stomach or intestines.
